Firefighters take Fundraising to New Heights - Literally!

On Thursday, 29th August 2024, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) took fundraising to new heights - literally.

Firefighters from across the brigade teamed up for a Charity Ladder Climb at the White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds, with the ambitious goal of collectively scaling the height of Mount Kilimanjaro. The event was organised in support of The Fire Fighters Charity (FFC), a vital organisation dedicated to providing physical, mental, and social support to serving and retired members of the fire services community, as well as their families.

The event was the brainchild of Firefighter Neil Shann, who wanted to break away from traditional fundraising activities. "I decided to arrange a ladder climb to do something a little different from the usual car wash," Neil Shann shared. "The climb was arranged to support the FFC, as it is one of those charities that not many people know exists. Therefore, it’s important for firefighters to not only raise money, but also raise awareness of what the charity does."

The ladder climb was a tremendous success, largely due to the overwhelming support of Hunslet Blue Watch, as well as WYFRS staff, firefighters from other watches and stations across the brigade. "The day went well," Shann said. "I had loads of support from my watch, as well as those from other watches and even other stations. The day would not have worked without all those volunteers."

The community's response was equally positive. Families and shoppers stopped by to cheer on the firefighters as they took turns on the ladder. Many took the opportunity to engage with firefighters, learning more about fire and water safety. The event also featured a special treat for visitors - a chance to tour one of WYFRS's new fire engines. "The community seemed to love it," Neil Shann noted. "Being able to chat with firefighters about their job, as well as checking out the new fire engines - everyone seemed to enjoy themselves."

The event not only raised much-needed funds for The Fire Fighters Charity, but also helped raise awareness about the charity's important work.

Firefighter Shann was particularly proud of the collective effort, saying, "I’m on Hunslet Blue Watch, but there were firefighters and staff from across West Yorkshire doing their bit. It was a true team effort, and it was great to see everyone come together for such a good cause."

The ladder climb was a perfect blend of physical challenge, community engagement, and charity support. It showcased the dedication of WYFRS to both their profession and the causes that matter most to them. As the event wrapped up, it was clear that this unique approach to fundraising had not only achieved its goal, but also brought the community closer to the firefighters who serve them every day.
