High-rise living - Your Safety

  • Install at least one smoke detector in your flat.  
  • Test detectors once a week. 
  • Close all internal doors at night.  
  • Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them. 
  • Ensure smoking materials are fully extinguished before placing them in household waste. 
  • Don’t cook if you feel tired or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  
  • Keep exit routes clear and free from obstruction.  
  • Make an escape plan and make sure you and your family know what to do if there is a fire in your flat. 

High-rise living – Building Safety 

  • Keep all exits and passageways clear of any obstructions.  
  • Report any damage to fire doors to the responsible person for the building. 
  • Don’t force large items down bin chutes as this may cause a blockage or compromise the safety of the chute.
  • Dispose of rubbish in the bins provided and don’t leave rubbish in communal areas or next to bin chutes. 
  • Don’t prop open fire doors in communal areas. 
  • Don’t store bulky items such as prams, bikes or mobility scooters in corridors. 
  • Make sure you are aware of emergency procedures for your building which will be provided by the landlords or owner.
