Long Service Awards Celebrate Dedication and Teamwork at The Piece Hall

On Saturday 14th September, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) held its prestigious Long Service Awards at the iconic Piece Hall in Halifax. More than 40 colleagues were honoured for their dedication, with awards recognising 20, 30, and 40 years of service to the community.

The day was a resounding success, with the local community meeting our crews, viewing our appliances, and visiting our recruitment and prevention stalls. Fire engines, aerial appliances, and specialist wildfire vehicles were on display, alongside interactive water flume demonstrations. The Fire Fighters Charity and WYFRS recruitment and fire prevention teams were also in attendance, engaging with visitors and sharing information.

Chief Fire Officer John Roberts reflected on the event, saying: "It’s always a privilege and pleasure to celebrate the loyal and dedicated individuals who are committed to their communities. The Service thrives because of its exceptional staff, and our Long Service Awards allow us, their families, and friends to honour their incredible achievements.

I believe that West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is one of the finest public services in the country. However, we could not be one of the best without the professionalism, dedication and commitment of our colleagues."

He added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your energy, drive and motivation in striving to achieve our ambition of Making West Yorkshire safer.

I’m grateful to everyone who made the day such a success, especially the public, for their continued support."

The public was invited to attend the morning session, where crews from across Calderdale showcased various specialist appliances and stalls. A fire-themed trail around the Piece Hall offered families an interactive experience, while the WYFRS recruitment and prevention teams provided safety advice and career information. Community engagement during the day was a key highlight.

Honouring Long Service and Commitment

The afternoon ceremony, attended by family and friends of award recipients, was a moment of pride and reflection for all involved. Medals and awards were presented by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Chief Fire Officer John Roberts, and representatives of the Fire Authority, including Councillor Karen Renshaw. The event featured music from the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Band, which added to the ceremonial atmosphere as recipients were formally recognised.

Awards were presented to operational and non-operational colleagues, recognising their length of service and contribution to the safety and wellbeing of the communities in West Yorkshire. The Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, first instituted by Royal Warrant in 1954, were presented on behalf of His Majesty the King to those who have served for over 20 years with exemplary conduct. Clasps for 30 and 40 years of service were introduced in 2022, and recipients were proudly presented with their awards and accompanying rosettes.

The day concluded with closing speeches, formal photographs, and a reception for recipients and their guests, marking the end of an important and prestigious day in the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service calendar.

We would like to extend our thanks to the public for their attendance and support, and to all the colleagues and volunteers who made the event possible. It was truly a celebration of the teamwork, dedication, and service that define West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
