High Sheriff of West Yorkshire visits Ossett Fire Station

The High Sheriff of West Yorkshire, Professor Adeeba Malik, visits West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Visiting Ossett Fire Station, in the Wakefield district, the day began with discussions with members of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Management Board, followed by a presentation on the district and its prevention initiatives by District Commander Paul Daly and Assistant District Commander Jimmy Fitt.

The prevention theme continued into the appliance room, where District Support Officer Richard Hames and crews from Ossett Red Watch demonstrated the Water Safety Simulator and specialist water rescue equipment.

Sara Milner and Peter Whitley, from our Appliance Familiarisation Team and Driver Training, brought the new Scania fire engine over to talk through and operate many of its design features.

The visit ended with a discussion around equality, diversity and inclusion, and a station tour visiting the technical rescue line rescue department.

The High Sheriff of West Yorkshire, Adeeba Malik, said:

"Thank you to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for showing me Ossett Fire Station in Wakefield. I learned a lot about water safety and the operations of the brand new fire engines you have. You save lives at the risk of your own. Thank you to all staff for your service to West Yorkshire."

The role of High Sheriff is a year-long voluntary, non-political position, and continues a tradition that stretches back more than 1,000 years.
