Commendations for Courageous Actions in Huddersfield House Fire Rescue

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is proud to commend local resident Robert Mallinson and Huddersfield Blue Watch for their courageous efforts during a devastating house fire on Leeds Road, Huddersfield in July 2024. The tragic incident, which attracted significant media attention, resulted in two fatalities.

Watch Manager Steven O’Keefe, who was at the scene, acknowledged Robert's pivotal role in the emergency response, stating: "Without Robert's assistance, valuable time would have been lost in the search for the casualties. His precise directions to their exact location allowed for a swift and coordinated rescue, likely preventing further loss of life. While two of the three casualties have sadly passed away, Robert's quick thinking in such a traumatic situation should not be understated."

Robert was also quick to alert emergency services, ensuring that Firefighter Control operators could gather crucial details about the incident early on. Their rapid response in handling the 999 call ensured that Firefighters had accurate information on the house layout and that people were inside the property, enabling a focused and effective rescue effort.

Huddersfield Blue Watch, who were the first crew on the scene, also received commendations for their actions on the night. Their quick response and professionalism under intense conditions ensured the rescue operation was carried out swiftly, despite the tragic circumstances. The team’s coordinated efforts, combined with Robert’s early assistance, were critical in securing the site and giving casualties the best possible chance of survival.

Reflecting on the events of that day, Robert said: "I just did what I thought was right. It was a dark morning and the glow of the fire caught my eye. My first thought was to get any people out of the house, wake up the neighbours, and alert the fire service. I don't feel like I deserve this commendation. I feel very blessed."

Huddersfield Blue Watch, along with other staff from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, welcomed Robert Mallinson to Huddersfield Fire Station for a special presentation to recognise his brave actions. During the visit, Robert was given a tour of the station, where he had the opportunity to see first-hand the equipment and operations used by the crew on the night of the incident. The visit concluded with a relaxed moment, as Robert shared a brew with the firefighters of Blue Watch, reflecting on the events of that day and the bond formed through their shared experience.

Despite the tragic loss of life, Robert’s actions, alongside the swift and decisive response from Huddersfield Blue Watch and the support of WYFRS Firefighter Control, ensured that Firefighters could act immediately upon arrival, potentially preventing further casualties.

Dale Gardiner, Kirklees District Commander, praised Robert’s extraordinary composure and professionalism of Blue Watch, emphasising the importance of teamwork between civilians and emergency services in life-threatening situations.

This commendation is part of WYFRS’s ongoing recognition of individuals and teams who make a difference in critical situations.

Both Robert Mallinson and Huddersfield Blue Watch stand as powerful reminders of the impact that bravery and quick thinking can have during moments of crisis, even when tragedy strikes.

Congratulations!
