Celebrating Our Half Century 50th Anniversary

Firefighters and colleagues across the county have been dedicated to protecting people living, working, and socialising in West Yorkshire for more than 50 years.

While becoming West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service from midnight on 1st April 1974, heroic colleagues have been saving the lives of local residents and visitors far longer. The merger of seven services in 1974 created what we now recognise as the fourth largest fire and rescue service in the country.

This year, the service has much to celebrate; welcoming a brand new fleet of state-of-the-art fire engines (the first of which are now on shift) and the completion and opening of the new modern training centre and headquarters at Birkenshaw, to name but a few. We’re also continuing our community work, trying our best to engage with all areas of society and achieve our goal of making West Yorkshire safer.

Keep your eyes on our website and social media channels for the latest updates, and behind the scenes exclusives to give you an insight into life in our busy service.

We’d love to see you at one of our events – head along to the next one at your local station, get involved in one of our projects, or just give our crews a wave and say hello the next time you see them.

We’ll continue to share news and updates with you, celebrating the service that continues to be at the heart of communities across the county.
