Celebrate safely this bonfire night by following our top ten tips:
- Site your bonfire well away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, overhead cables, trees and shubs and always away from fireworks.
- Never use flammable liquids - paraffin or petrol - to light the fire.
- Before lighting the fire check that no pets or children are hiding inside it.
- Keep everyone away from the fire - especially children, who must be supervised all of the time.
- In case of an emergency, keep buckets of water, the garden hose or a fire extinguisher ready.
- Make sure your fireworks conform to British Standard BS 7114.
- Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.
- Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.
- Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
- Keep pets indoors.
Remember: You could also enjoy one of the official firework displays or bonfire events organised by your local council. |
